Trainee Programme

We recognise that securing first rate training is of critical importance to those seeking to build a career as a solicitor.

We take the responsibility of providing high quality training extremely seriously and consequently have a high retention level among our Trainee solicitor group.  Many of our Partners completed their training with LK Shields Solicitors.  If you are talented, motivated and ambitious, then we believe that we are the Firm for you.

So what makes us different?

When we talk about our supportive culture, collegiate environment and career advancement based on individual merit, it isn't hollow rhetoric, it's how our firm functions. We recognise, encourage and reward passion, talent and ambition.

You will be given a lot of responsibility from the very beginning and you will be placed in practise areas that are of interest to you. The work will be challenging and the hours can be long consequently, but we also believe in giving our Trainees a good work-life balance. In addition you will enjoy a competitive remuneration package, a high level of partner support and supervision and a friendly workplace.

Our Trainees can expect to work alongside Solicitors who are recognised as leaders in their field by Chambers, What Lawyer and IFLR.  You will have exposure to the firm’s many large blue-chip international and indigenous corporate clients while working on complex and interesting legal matters.

Your talent and ambition are the only factors that will determine how your traineeship and subsequent career progresses. We expect all of our trainees to qualify as highly skilled lawyers and ultimately we view our trainees as the partners of the future. Our record of retaining those who complete our traineeship programme is second to none.

Trainee Solicitors: The Selection Process

The steps involved in the recruitment process are as follows:

  1. Application: CV and short covering letter submitted via a web portal
  2. Preliminary Interview: A 30 minute interview with a Partner and the HR Manager
  3. Assignment Pre-Final Interview: Assigned the afternoon before the final interview
  4. Final Interview: A Panel interview with at least two Partners from different departments

When you are called for the first interview you will meet with at least one of the firm’s Partners. We will talk candidly to you about what we see as our strengths and we expect you to tell us what you are looking for. We are aware that you may be considering other law firms, but we hope that when you meet us and learn a little about us through the selection process that you will want to work at LK Shields Solicitors.

If the first interview goes well you will be called back for a second and final interview.  In advance of this final interview you will be given an assignment to complete which then forms part of the final interview discussion.  At least two senior partners attend the final interview.

If you are successful we will make you an offer outlining salary and relevant details. In addition, Indentures of Apprenticeship will have to be completed and signed by you and your training solicitor (one of the Partners) and this document effectively determines the basis of the contract between you, the Law Society and our firm for the duration of your traineeship with us.

The application deadline for the Trainee Solicitors (2021) programme has closed. We may invite further applications for the 2021 programme over the summer of 2020. Those interested should review our website in June 2020.
