Trainee Solicitors: The Selection Process

We try to make our recruitment and selection process a positive experience for both the applicants and for us. We hope that after meeting us you will feel that we are the kind of people you want to train and work with.

When you are called for the first interview you will meet with at least one of the firm’s Partners. We intend that the interviews should be open and honest. We will talk candidly to you about what we see as our strengths and we expect you to tell us what you are looking for. We are aware that you may be considering other law firms. It is a hard decision to make. We hope that when you meet us and learn a little about us through the selection process that you will want to work at LK Shields Solicitors.

If the first interview goes well you will be called back for a second and final interview. If you are successful we will make you an offer outlining salary and relevant details. In addition, Indentures of Apprenticeship will have to be completed and signed by you and your training solicitor (one of the Partners) and this document effectively determines the basis of the contract between you, the Law Society and our firm for the duration of your traineeship with us.

We are no longer accepting applications for the 2012 programme for Trainee Solicitors. Details of the 2013 programme will be published in mid 2012.

What we are looking for in our Trainee Solicitors:

  • Preferably an undergraduate degree in law - if you don’t hold a law degree then an undergraduate degree plus postgraduate diploma in legal studies

  • Excellent interpersonal skills

  • Strong communication skills – both written and verbal

  • Strong analytical ability – can distill complex problems into key components

  • A common sense and solution focused approach

  • First rate time management and paper management skills

  • The ability to work on your own initiative and as an integral part of a team

  • The ability to fit in with the culture of our practice

  • A strong interest in business and the ability to demonstrate real commercial awareness
