What's it like to work at LK Shields Solicitors?

Andrew Power - Trainee Solicitor.

Andrew Power

My name is Andrew Power and I recently started my traineeship with LK Shields Solicitors.

If you are considering applying for a traineeship shortly, then if my own personal experience is anything to go by, you are probably befuddled by firm profiles, application procedures and deadline dates. But there is no cause for panic – it’s really not as bad as it may seem.

The first step to take is to decide which firms you want to work for. Make the most of all the resources available through the internet, college careers services and through legal directories such as Chambers and Legal 500.

My own position was that I wanted to work for a firm with a very strong training record, top quality clients and an excellent professional reputation. In addition, I also wanted to join a young, friendly and ambitious firm. LK Shields Solicitors seemed to tick all the boxes for me. It is without doubt a firm with top drawer clients which ensures a wide variety of highly interesting work, but also the firm is not so big that I feel that I have no voice.

As soon as you have made your choice you need to take your time in the preparation of your application. LK Shields Solicitors have an online application form which I found to be very useful. Make sure to give strong consideration in deciding how to put your best foot forward. Also bear in mind that whilst academic achievements are very important, the screening process will also be checking for other qualities.

If you are short listed, the recruitment team will arrange for you to come in for an interview with one or two partners. If you manage to impress at that stage, you will then be called for a second interview. It’s really not so bad – the interviewers are very experienced , friendly, keen to put interviewees at ease and also glad to answer any questions you might have. In addition there aren’t any assessment days or psychometric tests to worry about.

You will find out whether or not you have been successful after about a week and in turn you will be expected to revert with your decision within a week or so.

Wishing you the best of luck!
